The Kleckner Family Pet Saga: The Conclusion?

To get a dog or not to get a dog…that is the question.

Many of you are invested in the ongoing battle in my household of getting a dog or not getting a dog.

Many of you have also been very vocal about why we should or should not get a dog and I’ve appreciated all of your feedback. It’s been helpful!

If you aren’t aware of this ongoing saga, here is a quick recap.

I’m not a dog person. I’m sorry to say this, but it’s true. I never have been. It’s just who I am and although I love to hold my mother-in-law’s litters of baby mini golden doodles (I know you’re going to ask so look up Lisa’s Oodilly Doodles on Facebook or PM me for more info), I have never wanted my own dog.

I have a million reasons why I don’t want a dog. Mostly, I love my life how it is. My kids are older and more independent. As a stay-at-home mom for many years, I’ve done my time. I’m past the toddler stage – I don’t want to add a permanent toddler to my life. I want to leave for the weekend and not stress about finding a dog sitter.

Oh, and did I mention I’m not a dog person?

My middle daughter, however, loves animals. And she asked (kind-of-but-not-quite begged) for a puppy. She wrote a rather convincing proposal. Her older sister and younger brother said they wanted one as well, but they weren’t backed with as much passion.

I did a ton of research, asked a lot of questions, and really considered it. I prayed about it a lot, too. My husband and I spent many, many hours discussing it.

And we’ve decided…

*Drum roll please*

…we are not getting a dog.

I know, many of you are sad.

I know I mentioned I’m not a dog person. But for the record, my husband doesn’t want a dog either, so if you are going to place blame, please place it on both of us for crying out loud! (Why does the mom always get the blame in these types of situations??)

But wait! There’s more!

If you know my daughter Emily, you know she’s one of the sweetest little humans on the planet. Her dad and I sat her down and told her that we don’t think we want to get a dog. She immediately replied, how about a guinea pig?

*Drum roll again please*

I’d like to introduce you to the two newest members of the Kleckner household: Ginger and Leah!

Although not a puppy, these two cutie pies have brought our household a lot of joy in the three days we’ve had them. And how about Miss Emily for the compromise? I later asked her if she was super disappointed to not have a dog and she said, no, I know I’ll get one someday so I’m happy with guinea pigs for now.

She.Is.So.SWEET!!!!!!!

And that concludes the Kleckner pet saga, at least for now.

Thanks for walking on this dramatic pet journey with us! Never a dull moment at our house!!

Until Next Time,

Neko

  1. Of course you know we always had a dog and many times even a cat… with our kids, we also had a hamster stage, parakeet stage (don’t ever go there!), finch stage (not much better than a parakeet, just quieter), turtle and lizard stage, fish stage, (gold fish and aquarium fish). I’ll stick with the dogs and cats. But understand and respect your choices! Love ya all! They are cute little things!
